Given that NextDNS provides you with both DNS-over-TLS and DNS-over-HTTPS, I opted for DNS-over-TLS. It’s a very powerful tool at a ridiculously low cost so I would highly recommend having a look at it.Ĭonfiguring my AdGuard Home instance to use my NextDNS account couldn’t be simpler. It also helps to provide a middle point for all my DNS requests, further helping with my own privacy. I absolutely love this service and it provides services such as DNS-over-TLS and DNS-over-HTTPS. The next step was to get the encrypted DNS magic configured. Once I had that in place, I had my own running instance! Configuration I then put it behind a reverse proxy (Nginx), to make the certificate management easier using the certbot-nginx plugin.

I just followed their instructions on how to have it installed. Installation was pretty straightforward and easy. So off I went and installed an instance of AdGuard Home. To me Pi-hole’s interface just looks a bit dated and tired. Another important thing to me is the way something looks (which is rather ironic since my own design and UI skills are pretty poor). I have a local instance of Step CA to be able to leverage ACME for certificates on my home network. The other issue that I had with Pi-hole is that Lighttpd (the web server for Pi-hole’s web interface), doesn’t play too well with ACME.

There are a few reasons why I run my own local DNS server: One such alternative that caught my eye was AdGuard Home. And it turned out that there were in fact several alternatives out there. I absolutely love trying out new things, so I was excited to see if there was. And it was at this point it got me thinking if there was any other possible solutions out there. I personally like PiHole, very well documented, more audited codebase and wider range of usage.Recently I had to rebuild my home network (I had issues with my router which meant I had to do a full reset on it), and as part of this effort I wanted to rebuild my local DNS server. But if you confortable working with terminal, like simplicity and highly configurable service, you may choose PiHole as your DNS sinkhole. If you like everything just work out of the box with rich features, AdGuard Home may be more suitable for you.

Which one shoud you choose?Įither PiHole and AdGuard Home offer excellent way to block sites, ads, and trackers. Although both serve almost the same content from web interface, AdGuard looks more modern than PiHole web interface. PiHole support regular DNS query over UDP, but if you want to use DNS-over-HTTPS, you need additional tools like cloudflared – though AdGuard Home comes with DNS-over-TLS and DNS-over-HTTPS out of the box.ĪdGuard Home can easily block certain services or website like TikTok, Tinder, Facebook, etc with single click, while in PiHole, you need to specify domain and subdomains you want to block.

Features, UX and UIīoth can be configured to use any DNS resolver you wish. But I think PiHole still have the upper hand in term of performance compared with AdGuard even though they use the same infrastructure. My PiHole use enterprise grade server and located at data center, it meant to serve tens of millions of requests in a day while my AdGuard use old small-form-factor PC and way far from Indonesia Data Center. Yes, I install them with same virtualization technology, but hardware and infrastructure where my PiHole and AdGuard installed is different. I can't compare PiHole and AdGuard performance (my previous article) with my current resources. Just run PiHole install script ( curl -sSL | bash) and you are ready to go. The installation process also quite straightforward like AdGuard Home installation process. Installed on LXC with just 4 cores of Xeon CPU and 4GB of RAM it can easily handle 10 million queries per day (although on average, my PiHole only serves 2.5 - 5 million requests per day). In terms of reliability, I think PiHole definitely deserves a mention.

During 4 years using PiHole, I rarely experienced significant problems in maintenance, upgrade or troubleshoot process. I was using PiHole as DNS forwarder and DNS sinkhole of my main DNS servers (BIND). Regarding my previous post about Mikrotik, DNS-over-HTTPS and AdGuard, there is one product that I actually used several years before.
